The best words to describe Neal Medlyn’s work are his own. When I caught up with the performance artists and go-go dancer, he gave me a diverse list of what to expect in his latest two-part opus grappling with pop culture: … Her’s a Queen and Brave New Girl, opening tonight at The Chocolate Factory. Part I, presented by the Dance Theater Workshop in October 2009, facilitated the transition of Britney Spears from destroyed icon to purity through a candy-drug induced forgetfulness thrust upon her by what Medlyn describes as a “person who might be a bear or my baby or a paparazzo.” In Medlyn’s words, ... Her’s a Queen is about “Britney Spears, noise, destroyed, drunk, machines, fucked up, ruined, open, attacks, forgetting, purity, non-sexual touch, bears, abstinence, babies, forests, knives, snakes, YouTube, laptops, and cuddle parties.” At The Chocolate Factory, Part II now follows. Having taken Britney as pure as he could, Medlyn moves “to Hannah Montana to get purer. So the second half is me as this new pure white being who also happens to be still sad and fucked up (Miley). My bear/baby character has become a ghost and is my father or maybe a priest and tries to keep me pure. Things go awry.” For Medlyn, Brave New Girl is “Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus, Miley Stewart, purity, snow, teenage-hood, multiple personality, secrets, pop, indie music, 5 a.m. ‘me’ time, loneliness, parenting, ghosts, forests, cassettes, pop music, Disney, Twitter and fairy tales.” Don’t see the connection? See the show, and get a close look inside the workings of pop culture on the brain of Neal Medlyn. SOURCE Credit To: mileyraycyrus.bz |
