Teen superstar Miley Cyrus amazed children at a primary school in Derby today when we arranged for her to make a surprise appearance at their school assembly.
The kids were awestruck when their head teacher brought the singer into the hall – but soon hands were flying into the air as they got the chance to ask questions: “What’s your favourite song?”, “How do you change into Hannah?”, “Are you really a normal person?”, “Do you have a boyfriend?” That last question brought lots of giggles around the school hall and the answer “No!”
Miley was in Derby to launch her exclusive Miley & Max clothing collectionfor George at Asda in Spondon – where hundreds of fans turned up to get a glimpse of their idol.
Before heading to the store Miley made a secret trip to Silverhill Primary School, where two of her biggest fans, 10-year-old Abbie Foster and 11-year-old Alysha Boudir, are pupils.
They had entered our George at Asda Facebook competition to find Miley’s biggest fan in the UK and had sent us photos of Miley T-shirts they had designed and made themselve
Only head teacher Kate Nash knew that we’d arranged for Miley to come to the school, so it was a huge shock for everyone when the girls were brought up to the front of the hall and told they didn’t need to travel to Asda to try to see their idol … Miley had come to see them. Watch the amazing moment in the video above.
Miley answered lots of questions from the children. Asked if she was really a normal person she said she was – “I just work hard and I travel a lot.” She said: “I really I love this part of town where your school is. It reminds me of where I’m from – it looks a little bit like Tennessee.”
Asked how old she was, Miley said: “I’m 18 in two weeks’ time”, and she revealed the secret of how she turns into Hannah … “magic”.
One pupil asked if she liked Jackson in real life. Miley said he could be irritating but “he’s my favourite person”.
And what is Miley’s favourite song? I Miss You – written for her grandfather, who died of cancer in 2006.
After lots more questions and singing a song with the kids, Miley had a private meeting in the staff room with Abbie and Alysha and their families. The girls were overcome with emotion and tears flowed as Miley chatted and signed their T-shirts.
The whole school cheered and waved her off before trying to return to normal. The head teacher said keeping the news a secret had been one of the toughest jobs she had – the last celebrity visit to the school was Rammie, the Derby County mascot!
Miley then headed off to greet the huge crowds at Asda Derby and meet the winner of our competition, nine-year-old Eve Newton, from Burley-in-Wharfedale.
